While precise records of workout activities are recognized to be important for athletes, no efficient methods of tracking this data automatically exist. In this project, a system is proposed
that is able to monitor a user’s movement through a wearable device, detects push-up and squat events performed by the user, and reports and categorizes these events in a central database. The data can then be accessed through a web interface or through a smartphone application. The only required interaction required from the user is for starting and ending workout sessions, which can be done through either the smartphone or the web interface. The system is comprised of a wireless Sensor Node that uses an accelerometer and an ultrasonic sensor to gather data about the user’s position, a wireless Personal Communication Node which gathers data from the Sensor Node and detects push-up and squat events using a simple algorithm, a Central Server where data is stored persistently and further analyzed to categorize it into workouts and sets and to provide other insights about the workout session such as rest time, and a web application and smartphone application which allow access to the data.
