One of the most pressing health concerns facing seniors today is the risk of falling. Over 25% of
seniors fall each year, and falling once can double the chance of falling again. Most alarmingly,
less than half who fall will tell their doctor. In response, RiskWatch endeavors to tackle this
pressing issue in senior healthcare.
The RiskWatch project aims to create a senior wearable fall detection and health monitoring
system. It utilizes advanced technology such as the Bluno Beetle is a compact and powerful
Arduino Board and has Bluetooth LowEnergy (BLE) connectivity, a pulse sensor to measure
heart rate, and an IMU that contains an accelerometer, gyroscope, and a magnetometer, which
are all used to determine acceleration, orientation, and altitude respectively to detect a fall.
The device communicates via BLE with a paired Android application, allowing users to create
accounts to store and track falls. Family members or caregivers can link their accounts to the
user’s profile to access fall data and receive notifications in the event of a fall occurrence.
