According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in the United States. With heart diseases being so common, it is important to promote heart health to attempt to prevent these high numbers in future generations. For now, millions of people around the globe struggle with some kind of heart issue that needs to be monitored on a daily, if not hourly, basis. It can be extremely debilitating and scary for people to have to constantly remember to check their vitals when out and about every day. Our group decided to base our idea around this issue. For our project, we aimed to design and build a portable EKG device that is capable of taking readings on the go and displaying them on a wearable device around one’s wrist. We also aimed to incorporate various sensors to have the device be able to check for a variety of telling symptoms linked to heart issues. The device could connect to an app that records, displays, and sends the readings to doctors as well. The user wears the heart monitoring device which connects to and outputs values to the wrist watch’s displays in real time. The watch displays heart readings (such as bpm and an EKG graph) and controls an LED RGB ring to show the status of the heart. We used the Arduino MKR WiFi 1010’s Bluetooth capabilities to allow our EKG to connect to the wristband and cellular devices. The readings are taken by using an Arduino Wireless Transceiver along with a signal processor and a uECG attached to the user’s body using electrodes. With this design, we aimed to create an EKG that is easy-to-use and accurate for day to day use for people with heart problems and people concerned about their overall heart health.
