As many students and professionals’ transition into the online framework due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has not been overcome yet, many countries including the United States are still battling the pandemic. Many lab testing equipment are not available to students as they were in the past when in-person attendance was key to learning. This has caused a detrimental gap in our education and development as professionals in our fast-paced technology environment. This project aims to design and build a system that tackles this issue by creating a prototype of the SmartLab (SL). The SmartLab will be a device that integrates three different testing equipment such as the power supply, the function generator, and the oscilloscope. We found that this technology can be optimized, and it can be made more accessible for different ranges of students that cannot afford to pay the expensive value of these devices. The SL will be based on Raspberry Pi 4, MCP4725 12-Bit DAC, ADS1115 External 16 Bit ADC, and DSP520 module. The SmartLab will be operated remotely by using a mobile application based on the iOS platform. The communication between the application and the raspberry pi will be done by using a web server based on the MQTT protocol. This document includes all the background information that is needed to describe the project development of the SmartLab.
