Traditional Single-serve coffee machines have become so affordable in recent years. On the other side of the spectrum, enthusiast coffee machines have remained in the cost of hundreds to thousands of dollars. This leaves a perfect margin to create a smart coffee machine that expands on the cheaper options available. The goal of our project is to design a smart coffee machine that feels accessible and familiar to the average coffee drinker while also offering a high level of automation, customization, and intelligence that lifts it up to the modern expectations for an IoT device. With the Smart Drip, users can create profiles from their smartphones which allow them to create customized brewing schedules and set up preferences for temperature, volume, and strength. Once everything is in place and the mug is detected, the device will automatically measure the necessary water and coffee grounds based on the user-defined settings to brew the perfect cup of coffee on demand. Raspberry Pi will be used as a core microcontroller for the system, with the LCD display to show information, and sensors to detect water, temperature, coffee grounds, and the presence of a mug. The Smart Drip can also be controlled ‘offline’ allowing the end-user to enjoy a cup of coffee without the need for an internet connection. A schematic of the circuit and power diagram and the enclosure construction of the brewing chamber will be provided.
