According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, approximately 3.4 million American households own either a reptile or small mammal (gerbil, hamster, etc.) (AMVA). This represents a significant ownership of small mammals and reptiles in the United States and, consequently, a significant market for small pets. Valued at around $3.07 billion according to Business Research Insights, the reptile and small mammal market is large enough to consider making products that cater towards small animal owners. Despite the myriads of cages and enclosures available for sale at pet stores and big box outlets, the availability of smarter cages is lacking. Most small animal cages available today consist of a plastic or acrylic lining, with metal bars connecting the base to the rest of the cage. Several attachments to the animal might be included as well, such as salt licks or chewing toys. Few (if any) products that are available take into consideration the automation of animal care itself, leading our team to have decided to cater for this section of the small animal market with the CritterCube. Our smart animal cage will allow our users to monitor their furry friends and automate the more tedious tasks associated with pet ownership, such as feeding them and providing clean water. In addition, the CritterCube will tell our users when they need the cage to be cleaned. This provides a helpful reminder which ensures the cage’s upkeep and thus keeps the pet healthy.
