This project presents the Smart Sort Bot, an innovative robotic solution designed to enhance waste recycling processes by automating the sorting of recyclable and non-recyclable materials. Utilizing computer vision and AI algorithms, the system identifies and classifies waste materials, while a 5-DOF robotic manipulator equipped with motion planning algorithms performs accurate sorting operations. Mounted on a mobile robotic chassis, the bot ensures precise item placement into designated bins. Telemetry data is streamed in real-time to a cloud-based dashboard, enabling analytics and alerts for bin status. This proof-of-concept addresses key challenges in recycling, including worker safety and sorting accuracy, with potential applications in industrial and everyday environments. Future work aims to extend material classification capabilities, improve end-effector designs, and optimize system scalability for broader sustainability impact.
