Jafar Saniie received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland in 1974. He received his M.S. degree in biomedical engineering in 1977 from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, and his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1981 from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. In 1981 Dr. Saniie joined the Department of Applied Physics, University of Helsinki, Finland, to conduct research in photothermal and photoacoustic imaging. Since 1983 he has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology where he is the currently ECE Chair, Filmer Endowned Chair Professor, and and Director of the Embedded Computing and Signal Processing (ECASP) Research Laboratory.
Saniie’s research interests and activities are in ultrasonic signal and image processing, statistical pattern recognition, neural networks, data compression, estimation and detection, smart sensors, machine vision, and embedded digital and computing systems. In particular, he has performed extensive work in the areas of frequency diverse ultrasonic target detection techniques, order statistics, embedded signal processing architectures and system-on-chip design for ultrasonic imaging applications. Over the years, his research has been funded by NSF, ONR, DoD, EPRI, University of Chicago, and Argonne National Laboratory.
Saniie has supervised 37 PhD and 28 MS dissertations to completion. He has over 420 publications in technical journals, conference proceedings, book chapters, and technical reports. He has been the research advisor to students who received Bendix Award (1986), the IEEE Region 4 Best Paper Award (1986), IEEE Ultrasonics Best Student Paper Award (2006, 2013), and ECE Best PhD Paper Competition (2007 and 2008). He received the 2007 University Excellence in Teaching Award, and received the 2006 ECE Outstanding Faculty Award for Excellence and Contributions to Electrical and Computer Engineering Programs.
Saniie’s recent professional activities include serving as the Vice President of Ultrasonics (2014-2017), He has served as the IEEE UFFC Ultrasonics Awards Chair since 2018. IEEE UFFC Society, General Chair for the 2014 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium, Publication Chair for the 2013 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control (1994 - present), and Lead Guest Editor of three specials issues in ultrasonic imaging and system-on-chip design. He has been recognized as an IEEE Life Fellow for contributions to Ultrasonic Signal Processing in Detection, Estimation, and Imaging. He has received numerous recognitions for his service to the IEEE Ultrasonics Society.

Won-Jae Yi received his B.S. in Computer Engineering (2010), M.S. in Computer Engineering (2012) and Ph.D. in Computer Engineering (2017), all from the Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech). He continued his contribution to ECASP Research Laboratory as a Research Associate and Program Coordinator since 2017. In 2018, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Illinois Tech as an Adjunct Instructor. Since Fall 2022, he is an Assistant Teaching Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Illinois Tech.
At Illinois Tech, he has more than 10 years of experience in research in the field of computer hardware/software engineering, artificial intelligence and edge computing, cyber physical system, data security, Internet of Things, information processing and data fusion for IoT based embedded systems.
