Machine Learning and Modeling of Ultrasonic Signals for High-Fidelity Data Compression
Ultrasonic systems are widely used in imaging applications for non-destructive evaluation, quality assurance, and medical diagnosis. These applications require large volumes of data to be processed, stored, and/or transmitted in real time. It is essential to compress the ultrasonic RF signal without inadvertently degrading desirable signal features. This study explores the development of learning models for massive data compression based on wavelet packet transformation, using machine learning techniques. Furthermore, this study utilizes the fast chirplet transform algorithm to successively estimate broadband, narrowband, symmetric, skewed, nondispersive, or dispersive echoes. These parameters not only have significant physical interpretations for radar, sonar, seismic, and ultrasonic applications but also, yield a method for efficient and highprecision data compression. Signal modeling and parameter estimation of the nonstationary ultrasonic echoes are critical for image analysis, target detection, and object recognition. The objective of this study is to design computationally efficient algorithms and the implementation of 3D ultrasonic data compression.

Information Transmission Through Solids Using Ultrasound
Ultrasonic signals can be utilized as a viable communication method to transmit information through gas, liquid, and solid channels or a mixed media consisting of a solid interfaced with liquid and/or gas. Underwater communication channels using sound waves cause many challenges, often unforeseen, due to absorption, scattering, refractions, reverberations, multipaths, doppler shifts, temperature, salinity, and acoustic scintillation. Ultrasonic communication through the air is less prone to the environmental challenges that are often encountered in the underwater communications. Ultrasonic communication in solid channels is also adversely affected by absorption, scattering, refractions, reverberations, beam skewing, dispersion, mode conversation, multipaths, and above all these challenges are compounded by the geometrical structure of solids and type of ultrasonic waves. With solid structures many different ultrasonic wave types can be generated including Longitudinal (Compressional), Shear (Transverse), Surface-Rayleigh, PlateLamb (Symmetrical or Extensional Mode and Asymmetric or Flexural Mode), Plate-Love, and Stoneley (Leaky Rayleigh). The type of waves is governed by the frequency and angle of the incident waves on a solid structure where the quality of the signal for communication is limited by the composition and geometrical shape of the solids. For this study we have developed a testbed platform using the ZYNQ SoC (System-on-Chip) FPGA by Xilinx which offers reconfigurability and high-performance computational capability, high speed signal converters, power amplifiers for excitation of transducers, low noise receiving amplifiers and high frequency ultrasonic transducers for transmitting and receiving information. Theoretically, ASK (amplitude shift keying) or any form of digital modulation can be realized with the system using the concept of the software-defined ultrasonic communications (SDUC). In practice, the received signal is very complex, primarily caused by dispersion, reverberation, and multipath effects. We have examined SDUC system using AM (Amplitude Modulation), OOK (on and off keying), BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying), QPSK (quadrature phase shift keying), and OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing). This system is tested using differently structured solid channels (such as blocks, plates and pipes); and bitrates and bit rate errors are compared using 2.5 MHz ultrasonic transducers. Furthermore, this research presents an overview of using EMAT for ultrasonic communications in metal channels.

Computer/Machine Vision Applications and Systems, and Assistive System
Helping people with visual difficulties to navigate is challenging. Advances made with new technologies have boosted the development of systems to assist the daily lives of the visually impaired people. These systems intend to help by providing their user with some critical information about their environment using senses they can still use. Different approaches of assisting visually impaired people are investigated in this research, including a method to convey images to visually impaired people, a combination of computer vision and Internet connectivity on an Android smartphone, and an indoor positioning system based on AR (augmented reality) markers and computer vision techniques.
The challenge of this project is to create a complete navigation system that could be used for any kind of vehicles, including drone, and also helping visually impaired. This implies the necessity to detect the different obstacles surrounding the system, in that case using only cameras. In the case of the drone navigation, applications such as inspection drones or surveillance drones requires the possibility to detect and analyse key targets in an environment.

IoT Cybersecurity utilizing Artificial Intelligence and Edge Computing
Continued growth and adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) has greatly increased the number of dispersed resources within both corporate and private networks. IoT devices benefit the user by providing more local access to computation and observation compared to dedicated servers within a centralized data center. However, years of lax or nonexistent cybersecurity standards leave IoT devices as easy prey for hackers looking for easy targets. Further, IoT devices normally operate at the edge of the network, far from sophisticated cyberattack detection and network monitoring tools. When hacked, IoT can be used as a launching point to attack more sensitive targets or can be collected into a larger botnet. These botnets are frequently utilized for targeted Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against service providers and servers, decreasing response time or overwhelming the system. In order to protect these vulnerable resources, we propose an edge computing system for detecting active threats against local IoT devices.

FPGA Design of Software Defined Radio
Software-defined radio (SDR) is a radio communication technology which is based on software defined wireless communication protocols instead of hardwired implementations. The goal of this project is to implement SDR on an FPGA board and switch modulation techniques and encoding in real time. Here, FPGA platform provides highest flexibility and better signal processing support when compared to general purpose processor (GPP) or digital signal processor (DSP). One can embed this design into applications like cellular phone systems, satellite communication, GPS receivers and also military grade communication radios.

Ultrasonic RF Signal Analysis and Data Compression
Ultrasonic systems are widely used in industrial and medical imaging applications for diagnosis, nondestructive evaluation (NDE), defect recognition and classification. These applications require large volumes of data to be processed in real-time. Therefore, it is essential that the signal has to be compressed without degrading the signal quality or inadvertently damaging desirable signal features. Compression of the signal helps to reduce the computational time as well as for rapid transmission of data to remote locations. High signal fidelity is significant in many of the practical applications like ultrasound medical imaging or nondestructive testing. The objective of this study is to analyze various compression methods for ultrasonic applications, design and implement 3D compression algorithms and evaluate the degree of compression of ultrasonic data as a function of data integrity.

Hardware and Software Optimization for Systolic Architectures
The QRD-RLS hardware design is based on folded systolic architecture, which is suitable for VLSI/FPGA implementation. We optimize the systolic structure and boundary cell to acquire high throughput and low latency design. Compared with software implementation, the improved hardware design running on Xilinx Virtex 5 FPGA can provide nearly 10 times higher throughput with minimal cost. When compared with conventional design architectures, the optimized implementation is able to achieve higher performance (speed, area, and latency). The QRD-RLS module is applied to the system identification model for FIR filter design. The result shows that the filter coefficients coverage is very fast. In addition, the hardware is highly configurable by generic settings.
